Golden Lane is a narrow street located near the castle ramparts. It was originally built in the 16th century to house the castle guards of Emperor Rudolf II Habsburg, a great lover of art, alchemy, astrology, and astronomy.

Although the lane was temporarily called the Street of Alchemists or Alchemist Alley, alchemists, in fact, never worked or lived here. It seems more likely that Golden Lane was named after the goldsmiths who lived here in the 17th century.

These days nine of the 16 houses are part of a permanent exposition. You can also visit the armour exposition upstairs inside the fortification wall.

Sound of violin sadly echoes through Prague Castle. It flows into the surroundings from one of the most famous towers in Prague, from Daliborka. From the beginning of its existence, it served as a dreaded prison. It was named after the first prisoner, the knight Dalibor of Kozojed, who was imprisoned here in 1496 and then eventually sentenced and executed.

"Dalibor was the first convict to cross the threshold so it was named after him," Czech writer Alois Jirásek recalls.

Daliborka, in the beginning of the 16th century, served as a prison for lords and knights, and later, it also hosted burghers, peasant subjects, craftsmen, Jews - in short, anyone. It was famous for its underground dungeon, into which the convicts were lowered and tied to a rope. Check it out... You will immediately feel the urge to run out and look at the sun. Presently, the dungeon is lit with electric light and the bottom glitters with coins thrown in by visitors so they can hear them ring when they hit the bottom of the pit.

In 1781, the whole tower caught fire and was seriously damaged. Daliborka was reduced in size by one floor during the following repairs that took nine years. This could have been a sign the ruler was running out of funds. Daliborka was opened to the public as early as 1883.

Start your walk at the bottom of Bokšto Street. Head up the narrow lane until you come face to face with the half-round brick structure. Follow the path that circles the massive wall to really feel the strength and grandeur of the construction. You can imagine how enemy soldiers must have felt their knees shake when they saw those cannon barrels sticking out from the gun loops. At the end of the path, climb the stairs and you’ll find yourself back on Bokšto Street. Walk a few steps along the bastion wall until you spot the entrance, always marked with flags.
Inside, the bastion is even more impressive. In display cases you’ll see old locks and keys from Vilnius’s city gates. The keys were so huge, no one could have carried them around in their pocket!
Go down the stone steps into the main corridor of the half-round building. There’s always some kind of exhibition on. Most often it’s about the art of warfare — from prehistoric times to the Renaissance — but sometimes you’ll find other rotating exhibits too. Be sure to look for the Basilisk sculpture, lurking in the farthest corner of the corridor. In such an ancient building, it’s not hard to imagine a monster slithering up from the dungeons at night, waiting in the shadows for its next victim.

This sudden political and cultural elevation accelerated urban development and fostered a unique architectural movement that blended European modernist principles with local craftsmanship, functional needs, and national aspirations. Kaunas architects embraced clean lines, rational planning, and subtle ornamentation, but also introduced a warm, human scale that distinguished the city from more radical modernist centers. The result is an exceptional architectural landscape now recognized by UNESCO for its coherence, originality, and social meaning.

VMU (Vytautas Magnus University) — Faculty of Medicine building

The VMU Faculty of Medicine complex in Kaunas was built in the interwar period and designed with reference to contemporary Western university buildings (in particular the Brussels medical faculty). The building is often described as a transition from historicist/classical vocabulary toward modernism — “modernized classicism.” You’ll see a disciplined, symmetrical massing and classical proportions softened by simpler, less ornamented surfaces and more modern fenestration (larger grouped windows, simplified cornices). Internally the plan prioritised laboratories, lecture halls and clinical facilities with an emphasis on hygiene and modern technical systems for the time. It exemplifies how Kaunas adapted European university and institutional models to local budgets and tastes: stately and academic in presence but stripped of heavy ornament — a hallmark of Kaunas’s interwar public architecture.

Land Bank building (Žemės bankas)

Built in 1935 to house the Land Bank (Žemės bankas), the building at K. Donelaičio g. 73 was designed by architect K. Reisons. Today parts of it are used by Kaunas University of Technology. The Land Bank building represents an elegant application of modernist principles to a commercial/banking program: compact, clear volumes with restrained decoration. As with other Kaunas financial buildings it demonstrates how modernism was used to express institutional seriousness and technological progress while still speaking a local architectural language.

Bank of Lithuania building

The Bank of Lithuania’s Kaunas headquarters was designed by Mykolas Songaila after a 1924 competition and completed in 1928. It stands at the corner of K. Donelaičio and Maironio streets and was one of the city’s most prominent new institutions in the late 1920s. The Kaunas bank blends modernized neoclassicism and Art Deco details with Lithuanian national motifs. It’s a flagship example of how state institutions used architecture to project stability, national identity and modern capability — an important part of Kaunas’s role as the seat of government and finance during the First Republic.
